Living in The Annex

Much of the area’s retail located along Bloor Street features restaurant and entertainment venues geared towards a younger demographic. This stretch of stores includes a hodgepodge of clothing boutiques, bookstores, food markets, cheap restaurants, and outdoor cafes. The vibrant corridor comes alive at night as young people in the area fill the streets. Fitness enthusiasts can get in shape at the University of Toronto’s Athletic Centre, the new Varsity Centre, or the Jewish Community Centre at Bloor and Spadina.

The Annex is now over one hundred years old. It has a dynamic street scene and accessible public transit system, and it’s close to the business and entertainment districts as well as U of T. It is easy to see why there has been a return to prominence for this historic Toronto neighbourhood. With its heritage properties and tree-lined streets, it remains one of Toronto’s premier neighbourhoods.

People in The Annex

Because of its close proximity to the University of Toronto, the Annex is home to a large student and faculty population. There are also a number of young families, professionals, business people, and prominent artists.

Real estate in The Annex

Properties in The Annex primarily consist of large red brick homes featuring Romanesque and Queen Ann architectural styles, characterized by pyramidal roofs and turrets, recessed grand archways, and wooden spindled porches. Plenty of homes were turned into multi-unit student houses, but many of them have recently been converted back to single family houses. There are also a number of recently-constructed mid-rise apartments. Further west, into Seaton Village, homes tend to be smaller and less expensive.
